Creating design flow from one room to the next, can be a transition based on color, connection, and creativity.
Using color is an easy way to connect a flow to other rooms. Paint colors do not have to match, but using a similar color palette allows spaces to connect your rooms visually. This means having a main color in your great rooms, and separating complimentary colors in your hallways, foyers, or bedrooms can create a visual connecting flow.
Connection is another way of creating flow in your home. By using elements, such as, flooring, materials, and finishes create a connection. Consistent color in flooring throughout the main parts of your home, can have an effect on the flow between your spaces. Materials such as metals, should be the same and consistent, that allows an even connection. This includes fixtures, kitchen hardware, or decorative hardware in the same colors or finish. It’s ok to mix and match accessories, but I would keep the same color finish throughout. The color of a rug can also make all the difference when decorating your home. If you have a dark area, such as a hallway that doesn't get much light, use a light colored rug to brighten up the area. Theo wanted to help model, showing the colors of the rugs from Ballard Design, and how one change, can make all the difference to brighten up an area.
Finally we come to creativity. Decorating accents can be a creative style connection from one room to the other. Each room can have a different distinct style, than the next room, but should have an incorporation of a connection. Each room should look like it belongs to that style. Creativity can also be the use of throw rugs, home decor, accent pillows in pops of color, furniture, and artwork can create a cohesive flow.
I took pictures using the separation of walls showing how I created a flow connecting the rooms throughout my home.
Take a tour of your home, and notice the connection you have to your rooms. What do you see? How can you improve the flow, using your color, connection, and creativity.
