Yay For Spring

Writer's picture: Laurie HarrisLaurie Harris

The beginning of Spring is my favorite time of year. Even some of the words to the song, “ It’s the most wonderful time of the year. “. The pops of color, the leaves coming to life on the trees, and the fresh smell of florals and greenery all around.

This is when we are all itching to get to the garden centers to pack our carts full of flowers and vegetables plants to fill our flower and garden beds.

Whatever parts of the region you live in, around here in Arkansas, we have to wait towards the end of April to plant, in case we have one more freeze. I always tell people, don’t plant till after April 19. I say that date, because I always heard my Dad use that date, so I find myself saying the same date.

It’s great being outside and enjoying filling the beds and flower pots with all of the numerous varieties of flowers we brought home. Our dogs Theo and Bentley love to hang out and enjoy the sun, while we’re working around the yard.

I plan out layouts of our landscaping as vignettes. Trees have a place, garden and flower beds have a place. I inherited heirloom Irises from my great grandmother. I have them planted around a Maple tree, that was planted as a memorial for my Mother. Instead of a vegetable garden this year, I’m going to try a Sunflower garden. We’ll see how it goes.

I believe planting is by trial and error, and learning as you go along. Try new and different plants each season, to give a variety. You see what works, and doesn’t work. Remember, there’s always next season to try something new.

They say, “ gardening is good for the soul.” I think gardening teaches us about patience, because nothing grows overnight. Gardening brings out our creativity. It brings our appreciation for nature. Gardening teaches us to tend and cultivate. We feel a sense of accomplishment when we are proud to show off our flowers and vegetables, and say to ourselves and others “ Look what I grew! I did that! “

Don’t be intimidated to get out and plant something. Whether in the ground, or in a pot. GROW SOMETHING!!! Everyone has a green thumb. Don’t convince yourself that you can’t grow anything. YES YOU CAN!!!

In closing, I came across this quote. I want to share with you. Take this quote to heart;

“ We might think we are nurturing our garden, but of course it’s our garden that is really nurturing us. “ Words by Jenny Uglow

I wish all of you a wonderful Spring! Enjoy getting your thumbs in the dirt and turning them green. Be proud of your flowers, and vegetable gardens.

The important thing is, just have fun planting. That’s what it’s all about.

With thanks

Laurie
